"I didn’t know what I wanted to “focus” on as many people coming out of uni knew. So I decided to just go for EVERYTHING!"

What do you do?

I am an artistic director of Fuelled Dance Theatre (a Leicester-based queer/ally company). As a company we delve into theatre, contemporary dance and text work. We have been a working company since 2014, but I have been the director for 4 years!

Currently we are focusing on making a duet called y.O.u. y.O.u is a physical theatre duet portraying the raw hardships in same sex relationships within the queer community which is based on my first ever same sex relationships, which brings back so much emotions hunni! (Haha!). With this piece we want to work in a site specific piece by performing it outside.

We are also working on a new trio which doesn’t have a name yet as we are currently applying for funding (what a nightmare!). We plan to do a research and development period next year now because of covid-19.

The idea for this piece is based on the social contract of “coming out”. Connecting with three particular communities: LGBTQIA+, people on the autistic spectrum and travellers to see if there are any connections and similarities with each other.

How did you get to where you are?

As an independent artist I work mainly on contemporary dance, improvisation, live art, acting and drag performance. I have studied contemporary dance since the lovely days of high school starting with GCSE’s and then was like let’s do this at university!

So I went to Brighton to do a foundation degree and then topped it up at De Montfort University! All in all, four years of training in contemporary/physical theatre. Now I work as a director, dancer, actor, performance artist and teacher!

Why do you love what you do?

When I left university I didn’t know what I wanted to “focus” on as many people coming out of uni knew. So I decided to just go for EVERYTHING! This has really developed me as an artist as I have experienced such awesome and crazy collaborations with people!

That’s what I truly love about the arts… the community and connection it brings. For instance, working with the amazing dancers in my company and collaborating with them on new works, just gives me life and you never know where people’s minds are going to go! Best part of being a director!

Why are you based in Leicester?

I have lived here for over 5 years now and I love how people support each other in various ways, coming to see your shows and classes, sharing your work, helping each other out with applications and helping generals learning, collaborating and exchanging ideas with one another.
