Nile Barrow aka HO•FU

"Leicester is home... The diversity of culture, the diversity of creativity, the sense of community. Leicester will always hold a special place with me"

What do you do?

Creatively, I write, record, mix and produce original music.

How did you get to where you are?

I’ve had a natural passion for music from a very young age, that over time lead to me wanting to actively pursue it as a creative outlet. I studied Music at Leicester College for 3 years, and then decided to get out into the world with my original music. I had been in bands previous to this, but my first band that I fully pursued this with, was By The Rivers. We were together for 7 years, released 4 records, toured extensively, supporting high profile bands and playing shows and festivals around the UK & Europe.

This naturally came to an end a few years ago, and I decided at that time to step out of releasing / gigging for a few years, whilst all the time still writing. After taking time for myself, I then decided to start up a solo project called HO•FU, which leads me to where I am now.

Why do you love what you do?

My passion for music is about the energy and message you can bring with it. I personally feel you can bring such an openness through music that can allow that energy to flow into others, for them to allow themselves to be more open. But it must start with you. With this it becomes self love in action. Recognising the willingness to be open and true to yourself through your expression beyond any fear or external recognition. I feel in whatever way it may be, everyone should find that kind of willingness in their lives.

My intention has always been to spread a peaceful, loving, uplifting energy in the music I create, and I’m fortunate that this has always come very naturally to me when writing, even in testing times, often serving as a healing mantra to get myself through the density of certain feelings. I feel so strongly that music is a healing modality, and it’s with that in mind that I create music for everyone, myself included.

Why are you based in Leicester?

Leicester is home. I was born in Leicester, and have lived here all of my life. I love it here. The diversity of culture, the diversity of creativity, the sense of community. Leicester will always hold a special place with me.

What next?

I have recently released a new self titled EP ‘HO•FU’, as well as currently collaborating with some great local musicians/producers, including HIRO, with a release which will be out very soon. At the moment, I’m recording a set of new songs that I intend to release in the not so distant future. Anyone interested in listening to / keeping up to date with any of my music can do so via, which is where I always upload any music first.
