"Filmmaking is just a part of me. It's just there and always has been... We’re just a group of friends who are having fun and constantly laughing"

What do you do?

I run a small Leicester-based film/video production company called GM Finney Productions and direct/create films and music videos.

How did you get to where you are?

From a young age, I’ve always had a burning passion for filmmaking. I started at around 13, writing and making short and funny films with my brother Bobby and a few friends. We made a fan film that did pretty well online for the time. But after a few years away from it all, my filmmaking really came to its own when I started making music videos for my own bands and friends’ bands.

After a few solo videos, I partnered with Tommy Bee, my right-hand man, for another video and we came up with a pretty great, albeit bizarre idea shortly afterwards. Phil Garrett, who is fantastic at all thing’s audio, was brought on to bring to life a script written by Sam Winterton and Rich Prinn. Lots of friends and family were involved in the making of our first project and that is where we met Kelly McCormack, who is not only a talented actress but also a fantastic Producer.

And so, The RockMan was born. A feature length, sci-fi, comedy film/3-part series. After an amazing premiere, The RockMan went onto feature on Amazon Prime Video and remains there still! Since then, we have collectively created a string of short films and are always working on more!

Why do you love what you do?

Filmmaking is just a part of me. It's just there and always has been. My crew are incredible and have made me love it even more! We’re just a group of friends who are having fun and constantly laughing, it’s great. Always a good time on set, and even when I’m alone editing, it’s just so rewarding to see everyone’s hard work come together. It’s about having a good time, having fun. That’s why I do it anyway.

Why are you based in Leicester?

Leicester is where I was born, brought up and still reside. It will always be home, but when I was growing up, I was worried that I would be the only one into filmmaking. Actually, I had nothing to worry about. There are so many great filmmakers in Leicester, many of which are now my friends.

Leicester is an amazing place for filmmakers, there is so much on offer. Not to mention the Midlands Movies awards every year! I wouldn’t be based anywhere else.

What next?

We’ve just finished up on our next film, ‘Project 444’. The story was written by Tommy Bee and directed by myself. Starring three of our crew; Kelly, Phil and Micky. It’s a half hour sci-fi film about a science corporation and a good-hearted couple whose lives come together in an unexpected way. It also highlights real-world issues. That is now on Prime Video here!

After that, we have another short film called ‘Murder’ which is ready to go, it’s the first GM Finney Production that I haven’t directed so that’s really cool! Another two short films this year too, so keep an eye out on social media for info on those!
