"I love writing and performing because it’s the only two things I can do kind of well. I am usually a very shy person, but on stage I get to be honest, loud and confident"
What do you do?
I’m a writer and performer, mostly doing poetry, but I'm getting into interdisciplinary practices mixing the poetry with music and visuals.
How did you get to where you are?
I have been doing the poetry thing on stage for almost five years, after going to my first Find the Right Words open mic night at Upstairs at the Western. The environment was very lovely and nurturing, with room for making mistakes.
Eventually I started performing at Anerki and experimented with collaborations and loops, found out that poetry could also go well with music and did that with a band for a bit.
Now I am trying to finish an MSc in Cultural Events Management at DMU and tweaking my debut poetry collection while staying at home for survival.
Why do you love what you do?
I love writing and performing because it’s the only two things I can do kind of well. I am usually a very shy person, but on stage I get to be honest, loud and confident.
Most of the time, I speak about things I haven’t seen being spoken about before, or very little and from unfair angles: stories I see on the news, hear about in my daily life, witness or experience.
I love it when there is rapport and interaction with the audience, when something resonates and there is a connection. If it helps make other people feel less alone, it also helps me to feel less alone.
Why are you based in Leicester?
I have been living in Britain for almost a decade, but in Leicester since 2012. My husband is from here and he works here, so here we are. I am originally from the north of Mexico and we could go back in theory, but I really, really like it here. It is commutable, with a thriving artistic community, people who support and love each other, and if I want to travel somewhere – I sometimes perform in Nottingham and London – I can just hop on a train and come back the same day. It is lovely. I could do with better Mexican food options, but the Indian and Chinese options are fantastic!
I am currently finishing up some stuff for my upcoming debut poetry collection Meanwhile for Burning Eye Books. The book is coming out in October, but I will be doing a few things here and there to promote it.
I am open for multimedia collaborations with video, music, performance, and maybe try alternative methods of communication – or even venues once it is safer. Maybe my own podcast? If you know stuff, just let me know 😊
